Podcast

Mike Johnston, CPhT is the Founder and CEO of the National Pharmacy Technician Association (NPTA).  Under Mike’s strategic vision and leadership, NPTA has become the world’s largest professional membership organization for pharmacy technicians, with over 80,000 members in the United States and from around the world who practice in a diverse variety of practice settings, including community pharmacy, health-system pharmacy, federal pharmacy services, purchasing, and education, among others. Highlights from the interview

Mike uses his voice as an advocate for key issues affecting pharmacy technicians today.  As of September 2021, that includes mandatory competence-based exams (ex:  PTCB and NHA), mandatory registration, standardized formal education and training requirements, and a pharmacy technician representative on each State Board of Pharmacy.

We need to advance pharmacy technicians as we advance pharmacists.

NPTA has a great website.  Visit https://www.pharmacytechnician.org to learn more about NPTA, membership, CE, certifications, how to become a CPhT, and more.

Who should join NPTA?  Pharmacy technicians and technician students in any practice setting, CE seekers, and those needing to become a CPhT.  Anyone looking for professional development should check out NPTA’s advanced certification opportunities, such as Sterile Compounding (IV) Certification, Hazardous Compounding Certification, and Non-Sterile Compounding Certification.

NPTA and PCCA (Professional Compounding Centers of America) have a great relationship and work on projects together.  College students should go to PCCA’s trainings.

Mike serves as the only voting pharmacy technician member of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP).  He represents NPTA and pharmacy technicians.

Mike published several books, including some pharmacy technician training textbooks and training manuals.

Mike has his own website and courses outside of NPTA.  To learn more, visit https://www.rxmike.com.

Mike publishes CPhT Connect, a magazine specifically for pharmacy technicians.  It contains CE, information, and updates on what’s going on in the industry.

CPhT Connect Podcast complements CPhT Connect Magazine.  The mission is connecting pharmacy technicians and getting them to engage with one another.  The podcast brings interesting industry leaders to the table each week to discuss what’s going on in pharmacy and how it pertains to pharmacy technicians.

Mike’s personal mission is to eliminate preventable medication errors in part by helping pharmacy technicians realize and reach their full potential.  Mike has a passion for medication safety, patient safety, and reducing and eliminating medication errors.  He also wants to help pharmacy techs advance their careers.  The more we can train, educate, and advance techs, the more they can have an impact on medication safety and decrease medication errors.
